Popular legends behind Holi celebrations-
Like every other festival in the country, Holi is also associated with popular legends. These interesting stories tell the history behind the rituals of various festivals.
Story of Holika Dahan-
Legend has it that once, there was a powerful king named Hiranyakashipu. He was a devil and hated him for his cruelty. He considered himself a god and wanted everyone in his kingdom to worship him like that. However, his own son, Prahlad, was a devotee of Lord Vishnu and refused to worship his father. Angered by his son’s disobedience, Hiranyakaship tried to kill his son several times, but nothing worked.

He then sought help from his evil sister, Holika. Holika had a special power to be immune to fire. So, to kill Prahlada, he made her sit with him on a pyre. But due to his evil intentions, his power became ineffective and he burned to ashes. On the other hand, Prahlada gained this immunity and was saved. That is why the first day of Holi is celebrated as Holika Dahan and symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
Story of Radha and Krishna-
In the region of Braj (where Lord Krishna grew up) in Uttar Pradesh, the day of Rangpanchami is celebrated as a huge festival in memory of the devotional love of Krishna and Radha. A local legend is also associated with it.
When Krishna was a child, he acquired a distinctive blue skin color after drinking the poisonous breast milk of the She-demon Putana. Later, when he was younger, he often grieved whether Radha or other girls in the village would ever like him because of his dark complexion.
Seeing his desperation, Krishna’s mother tells him to go and paint Radha’s face with any color. So when Krishna applied colors to Radha, both of them became one couple and since then people started playing with colors on Holi.

How is Holi celebrated in India?
Celebrating the colorful festival of Holi includes several rituals:
Holika pyre ready-
A few days before the festival, people start collecting wood and other inflammable items for the bonfire. Combustible materials are then assembled in a pyre in colonies, community centres, parks, or other open spaces. Above the pyre, according to legend, an effigy of Holika is lit.
Holika Dahan-
The first day of the festival is celebrated as Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi. After sunset, people gather around the pyre, perform puja (prayer) and then burn it. People sing and dance around the pyre, as it symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
